چکیده

A comparative study of the geomagnetic and ionospheric data at equatorial and low-latitude stations in India over the 20 year period 1956±1975 is described. The reversal of the electric ®eld in the ionosphere over the magnetic equator during the midday hours indicated by the disappearance of the equatorial sporadic E region echoes on the ionograms is a rare phenomenon occurring on about 1% of time. Most of these events are associated with geomagnetically active periods. By comparing the simultaneous geomagnetic H ®eld at Kodaikanal and at Alibag during the geomagnetic storms it is shown that ring current decreases are observed at both stations. However, an additional westward electric ®eld is superimposed in the ionosphere during the main phase of the storm which can be strong enough to temporarily reverse the normally eastward electric ®eld in the dayside ionosphere. It is suggested that these electric ®elds associated with the V Bz electric ®elds originate at the magnetopause due to the interaction of the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic ®eld.

Numerical analysis of global ionospheric current system including the eect of equatorial enhancement

A modeling method is proposed to derive a two-dimensional ionospheric layer conductivity, which is appropriate to obtain a realistic solution of the polar-originating ionospheric current system including equatorial enhancement. The model can be obtained by modifying the conventional, thin shell conductivity model. It is shown that the modi®cation for one of the non-diagonal terms (Shu) in the c...

Letter to the Editor Geomagnetic storm eects at low latitudes

The geomagnetic horizontal (H) ®eld from the chain of nine observatories in India are used to study the storm-time and disturbance daily variations. The peak decrease in storm-time variation in H showed signi®cant enhancements at the equatorial electrojet stations over and above the normally expected decrease due to the ring current e€ects corrected for geomagnetic latitudes. The disturbance da...

An explanation for anomalous equatorial ionospheric electric fields associated with a northward turning of the interplanetary magneticfield

Anomalous reversals of the zonal equatorial electric field component have sometimes been observed when the interplanetary magnetic field turns northward from a steady southerly direction. We suggest that this reversal is associated with a sudden change in the convection electric field in the magnetosphere and present measurements to support this explanation. Although slower variations in the co...

Response of equatorial ionosphere to episodes of asymmetric ring current activity

We present the characteristics of the response of equatorial ionospheric zonal electric ®eld and Fregion plasma density to the asymmetric ring current intensi®cations that occurred in succession on 16 December 1991, corresponding to the STEP/EITS-2 campaign period. The study is based on high-timeresolution (1-min) data of asymmetic ring current indices, ASY(H/D) and F-region vertical plasma dri...

Vertical E × B drift velocity variations and associated low-latitude ionospheric irregularities investigated with the TOPEX and GPS satellite data

With a well-selected data set, the various events of the vertical E × B drift velocity variations at magneticequator-latitudes, the resultant ionospheric features at lowand mid-latitudes, and the practical consequences of these E × B events on the equatorial radio signal propagation are demonstrated. On a global scale, the development of a equatorial anomaly is illustrated with a series of 1995...
